When to start writing

R.Redswood

A question I've received before is when did I begin writing. In my "bio" section of this site, I mentioned that I began writing back in the sixth and seventh grade, and I really grew to love the craft due to my English teachers I had at the time. Currently, I'm in my second year of my graduate/master's degree, so it's been about ten/eleven years since then, and my writing style has greatly improved. Back in sixth/seventh grade, I wasn't the best at grammar, and I often forgot to separate dialogue with quotations; I didn't even space my chapters/stories into paragraphs.

Needless to say, my writing was rough, but my teachers encouraged me on nonetheless and gave me valuable critiques about the pros and cons of my writing back then. They never focused just on the negatives or just on grammar, and that was really what made the writing experience so uplifting and pushed me to continue. So, what's the point of all of this?

The point concerns the fact that you should begin writing when you get that inspirational tug to type a story, whether that be a poem, novel, short story, etc., on the computer or when you feel like you should put pen to paper and get out your thoughts. It's also important to note that you don't have to crank out a full novel on your first try or write the best poem born to humanity; you write what you feel is coming to you, and you adapt it over time based on changes in your writing style, preferences, etc. And if you don't want to change it, that's fine too, but you do want to keep an open mind since some academic papers don't allow for such freedom.

But for your own personal writing, start when you feel most comfortable. It can even be a burst of inspiration that develops into two sentences, but those two sentences can lead you to expanding your writing down the road. Everyone moves at their own pace, so there's no rush to start early, and you also don't have to find inspiration to write in the school setting. That's just how I found my passion for the craft. Anyway, I hope that this helps!
